The African violet has received the scientific name of Saintpaulia ionantha. The genus Saintpaulia comes from the name of the discoverer and the species ionantha in Greek means "who has flowers like violets"  The African Violet is a beautiful plant that can reach up to 15 cm high. The crown can grow to 30 cm. The leaves are usually round or oval finely hairy and have a fleshy texture. The flowers grow in clusters on slender stalks. The flower has a corolla with five lobes. They can be colored purple, mauve, pale blue, white, pink, coral and even yellow
