Planting and care of Amaryllis

Conservation of the bulb before the plantation.

The bulbs can be kept at a temperature of about 10 ° C before being planted. The bulbs are very sensitive to frost. You can also stagger planting several bulbs by interval of 15 days in order to enjoy these beautiful flowers for a longer period.

Preparation for planting.

Place the bulb in lukewarm water for a few hours. The warm water will stimulate root growth.

Planting.

You must choose a pot with a diameter just slightly larger than the bulb. The pot must have a distance of 1 to 2 cm between the wall and the bulb. Place gravel in the bottom of the pot to ensure good drainage. Place your bulb so that the upper part is not completely covered with soil. Fill the empty space with a good  prepared soil. Firmly press the soil to remove air and stabilize the bulb in the pot.

Watering.

At first, you must slightly water the bulb. When the flower stem is visible, you can increase the amount of water. Growth amaryllis is fast enough. Water needs of the plant will increase until flowering.

Temperature.

A temperature of about 20 ° C is optimal for growth and flowering.

After flowering.

After flowering, cut the flower stem near the bulb when it becomes mole. The bulb will not spend its energy on producing seeds. Keep the leaves. They will replenish the energy of the bulb. If the weather permits, it is possible to transfer the bulb outside. You can fertilize the plant to help rebuild its reserves. In the fall, stop watering. When the soil is dry, place the bulb in a cool, dark place. Do not freeze. It must rest for six weeks for the amaryllis to flower again. Generally, it is necessary to calculate between 7 to 10 weeks after planting  for the plant to bloom again.
